Hackers to launch satellites to block censorship

"Let's take the Internet out of the control of terrestrial entities."

This call to arms, issued by hacker activist Nick Farr, is the rallying cry behind a new plan to launch satellites into space to prevent Internet censorship.

Farr, a spokesperson for the Germany-based Chaos Computer Club, outlined the group's mission at this week's Chaos Communication Congress in Berlin, the BBC reported. Calling for an "uncensorable Internet in space," Farr outlined the CCC's Hackerspace Global Grid, a project that also will involve setting up low-cost ground stations to track and communicate with the fast-moving satellites.

The time is now

Farr, who introduced and began soliciting donations for the Hackerspace Global Grid this summer, said the project is now a top priority because of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), a bill that some critics say could have catastrophic effects on freedom of communication and the way people connect to the Internet.

"Hackers are about open information; we believe communication is a human right," Farr said.

The CCC's only motive in launching the proposed satellites is knowledge, he said, and the desire to "put humanity back in space in a meaningful way."

Working with Constellation, a German aerospace research initiative, the Hackerspace Global Grid plans to have three prototype ground stations in place by the first half of 2012.

Tricky tech and a legal black hole

The hackers might not have an easy go of it, Alan Woodward, a computer science professor at the University of Surrey, told the BBC.

"Low-Earth-orbit satellites, such as have been launched by amateurs so far, do not stay in a single place but rather orbit, typically every 90 minutes," Woodward said. "That's not to say they can't be used for communications, but obviously only for the relatively brief periods that they are in your view."

"It's difficult to see how such satellites could be used as a viable communications grid other than in bursts," he added.

There's a legal black hole to contend with, as well: Outer space is not governed by the countries beneath it, Woodward explained, so while the CCC's satellites could function as planned, "any country could take the law into their own hands and disable the satellites."

Cheetah the chimp from 1930s Tarzan flicks dies (omg!)

PALM HARBOR, Florida (AP) ? Cheetah, the chimpanzee sidekick in the Tarzan movies of the early 1930s, has died at age 80 a Florida animal sanctuary said.

The Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Palm Harbor announced that Cheetah died Dec. 24 of kidney failure.

Sanctuary outreach director Debbie Cobb on Wednesday told The Tampa Tribune that Cheetah was outgoing, loved finger painting and liked to see people laugh. She said he seemed to be tuned into human feelings.

Based on the works of author Edgar Rice Burroughs, the Tarzan stories, which have spawned scores of books and films over the years, chronicle the adventures of a man who was raised by apes in Africa.

Cheetah was the comic relief in the Tarzan films, which starred American Olympic gold medal swimmer Johnny Weissmuller. Cobb said Cheetah came to the sanctuary from Weissmuller's estate sometime around 1960.

Cobb said Cheetah wasn't a troublemaker. Still, sanctuary volunteer Ron Priest said that when the chimp didn't like what was going on, he would throw feces.

Rescuers work near an overturned Russian-made Tupolev 134 passenger jet at the airfield outside Osh on Dec. 28. The packed TU-134 flipped over and caught fire on landing in the southern Kyrgyz city today injuring at least six people, officials and witnesses said.

Amazing that all the passengers survived.?

AP reports:

The Kyrgyz government says that 31 people have been injured in the crash-landing of a passenger jet.

Kyrgyzstan's Health Ministry said the Soviet-built Tu-134 jet was carrying 95 passengers and six crew when it crash-landed in deep fog Wednesday at the airport of the southern city of Osh.

Emergency Situations Minister Kubatbek Boronov said the plane flying from the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek was damaged when it made a rough landing in Osh. He didn't elaborate, but eyewitnesses said the jet rolled off the runway, broke its wing, overturned and caught fire.

Boronov said that 17 of the 31 injured were hospitalized.

The Tu-134 is a two-engine jet that has remained in service with many post-Soviet carriers.

Airtight brings Apple's Airplay to your Google TV, makes Cupertino and Mountain View play nice

Airtight
We've seen Airplay work its way into Android phones thanks to apps before, but what if you to reverse the equation? What if you want to stream not from, but to a desert-flavored player. Well, it's little more than a proof of concept at the moment, but Airtight does just that -- turns your Google TV into an Airplay-compatible receiver. You'll obviously have to be running the latest OS update to enable Market access, and the you'll pay $0.99 for the privilege of tinkering with the still rather rough app. For the moment there is no support for streaming music (only videos), anything with DRM is wont play and mirroring is but a dream. But, it works, and that's all that matters... right? Hit up the source link for more details and to purchase it now.

Israel debates whether Armenian killings genocide

(AP)? JERUSALEM ? Over their prime minister's objections, Israeli lawmakers are debating a proposal to recognize the mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks as genocide.

Doing so would likely further strain already acrimonious relations with Turkey, which denies the genocide label and insists the massacres occurred in civil unrest as the Ottoman Empire collapsed during World War I, with losses on both sides.

An Israeli government official says Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu requested that Monday's debate be canceled. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not allowed to disclose the information.

Israel has previously stopped short of recognizing the killings of 1.5 million Armenians as a genocide.

In recent years, however, ties with Turkey have frayed badly.

Claims lowest since '08 as job market improves (AP)

WASHINGTON ? In in the latest sign that the economy is surging at year's end, unemployment claims have dropped to the lowest level since April 2008, long before anyone realized that the nation was in a recession.

Claims fell by 4,000 last week to 364,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. It was the third straight weekly drop. The four-week average of claims, a less volatile gauge, fell for the 11th time in 13 weeks and stands at the lowest since June 2008.

While the economy remains vulnerable to threats, particularly a recession in Europe, the steady improvement in the job market is unquestionable.

"The underlying trend is undeniably positive," said Jennifer Lee, senior economist with BMO Capital Markets. "I think everyone is starting to come around to the view that, yes, there is a recovery going on."

Unemployment claims are a sort of week-to-week EKG for the job market. Except for a spike this spring, after the earthquake and tsunami in Japan hurt U.S. manufacturing, they have fallen steadily for a year and a half.

Claims peaked at 659,000 in March 2009. In the four years before the Great Recession, they mostly stayed between 300,000 and 350,000. That claims are edging closer to that range is a sign that the layoffs of the past three years have all but stopped.

"We haven't yet really seen substantial numbers of new jobs, but this is definitely an encouraging sign of what lies down the road," said Sam Bullard, an economist at Wells Fargo.

The steady decline may also herald a further decline in the unemployment rate, which fell in November to 8.6 percent from 9 percent the month before. The December rate will be announced Jan. 6.

If unemployment claims keep declining, the unemployment rate might fall as low as 8 percent before the November elections, said Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at BTIG LLC, a boutique brokerage.

The presidential election will turn on the economy. Ronald Reagan holds the post-World War II record for winning a second term with the highest unemployment rate. He won in 1984 with unemployment at 7.2 percent.

Economists will also watch closely on Jan. 6 to find out how many jobs were added this month. It added at least 100,000 each month from July through November, the best five-month streak since 2006.

"When you fire fewer people, hiring unquestionably follows," Greenhaus said. He expects employers to create as many as 200,000 jobs per month if the trend continues.

In another encouraging report Thursday, the Conference Board's index of leading economic indicators rose strongly in November for the second straight month, suggesting that the risks of another recession are receding.

The index puts the economy on track to grow at a 4 percent annual rate in the fourth quarter, which ends this month, said Ian Shepherdson, chief U.S. economist with High Frequency Economics.

The economy hasn't posted 4 percent growth or stronger since the first quarter of 2006, when it grew at a 5.1 percent rate. The best it has done since the recession was 3.9 percent, in the spring of 2010.

The Great Recession lasted from December 2007 through June 2009. Economists didn't declare that it was under way until December 2008.

The economy grew at a 1.8 percent annual rate in the third quarter of this year. The government revised that figure downward from 2 percent Thursday because Americans spent less than the government had estimated.

Besides a brightening job market, the positive factors include strong holiday shopping and cheaper gas, which leaves people more money to spend on other things and helps consumer confidence.

"The economy is carrying some clear momentum into 2012," said economist Joel Naroff of Naroff Economic Advisors.

The flip side, said Bullard, the Wells Fargo economist, is political uncertainty at home and a near-inevitable recession across the Atlantic. Those factors will weigh on growth next year and might reverse the momentum that the job market appears to be enjoying.

In Europe, the 17 nations that use the euro currency are struggling to deal with debt problems and keep the currency union together. A recession there would be bad news for American companies that export to Europe.

Another source of uncertainty for 2012 is what Congress will do about the Social Security payroll tax cut, set to expire Jan. 1. Extended unemployment benefits for the long-term unemployed also expire on that date.

The tax cut applies to 160 million Americans. For a worker earning $50,000, it saves $1,000 over a year. For a high-earning couple, it would save $4,404 over next year, or about $85 a week.

Economists say that failing to renew the tax cut and emergency unemployment aid could cut a full percentage point from economic growth next year.

CA-CANADA Summary (Reuters)

U.S., Canada to set security deal at White House

(Reuters) ? The United States and Canada are scheduled to announce a new security agreement next Wednesday designed to lower obstacles between the two nations while ensuring the perimeter around them is secure. President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Stephen Harper are set to unveil the agreement after a meeting at the White House on Wednesday afternoon.

Expanding oil exports top priority: Canadian minister

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada believes the United States will ultimately approve TransCanada Corp's proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which Washington put on hold last month amid fierce environmental opposition, Natural Resources Minister Joe Oliver said on Friday. The $7 billion oil pipeline to Texas from Alberta, as well as a new pipeline to Canada's West Coast, are crucial to preventing a costly bottleneck in export capacity over the next four to seven years as oil sands production jumps, Oliver said.

Enbridge gets first aboriginal partner for Gateway

CALGARY, Alberta (Reuters) - The Gitxsan First Nation said on Friday it has agreed to become the first aboriginal partner for Enbridge Inc's C$5.5 billion ($5.42 billion) Northern Gateway oil pipeline, one day after other native groups in British Columbia pledged to block the project. Elmer Derrick, a hereditary chief of the Gitxsan, said in a statement that the group had decided to take an equity stake in the line. Enbridge will finance the purchase.

Enbridge sees native support for Gateway pipeline

TORONTO (Reuters) - Enbridge Inc expects to win support for its C$5.5 billion ($5.4 billion) Northern Gateway oil pipeline from a majority of native communities along the proposed route based on current negotiations, an executive said on Friday. The company has signed deals with some aboriginal groups for an overall 10 percent equity stake in the project, which would carry oil sands-derived crude to the West Coast from Alberta, Enbridge Vice-President Janet Holder said during a conference call to discuss one agreement.

Jobless rate unexpectedly rises in November

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canada's economy unexpectedly lost jobs for a second straight month in November, raising concern that weakness in other countries may do lasting harm to an economy that has so far been surprisingly robust. Net job losses totaled 18,600 jobs in the month following a hefty 54,000 drop in October, Statistics Canada said on Friday, pointing to a poor economic performance in the final quarter of the year.

RIM caps dismal year with another profit warning

TORONTO (Reuters) - Research in Motion booked a huge charge to write down inventories of its unloved PlayBook tablet on Friday, capping a dismal year with a steep profit warning that sent its shares tumbling almost 10 percent. Waterloo, Ontario-based RIM, the company whose now ubiquitous BlackBerry created the concept of on-the-go email, said it no longer expects to meet its full-year earnings forecast due to weak sales, the PlayBook writedown and a charge related to a damaging service outage in October.

RIM is "national jewel" worthy of support: minister

NEW YORK (Reuters) - BlackBerry smartphone maker Research In Motion is a national "jewel" worthy of support, Canada's industry minister said on Friday, insisting that Canada is open to foreign investment even though it blocked a $39 billion potash deal last year. "RIM is a Canadian jewel," Christian Paradis told Reuters in an interview in New York on Friday, speaking in his native French. "I think we have to support companies like RIM."

Natives to oppose West Coast oil pipelines

(Reuters) - Aboriginal groups in the Canadian Pacific province of British Columbia said on Thursday they had formed a united front to oppose all exports of crude oil from the Alberta tar sands through their territories. The declaration is another political blow to the Canadian energy sector and Canada's right-of-center Conservative government after Washington decided last month to delay approving a pipeline carrying oil sands crude to the Gulf Coast.

RBC PMI shows slower manufacturing growth

TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadian manufacturing growth slowed in November to the weakest level in four months as worsening global economic conditions took a toll on the domestic environment, data on Thursday showed. The RBC Canadian Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index came in at 53.31 in November, above the level of 50 that separates expansion from contraction.

TSX ends lower but posts big weekly gain

TORONTO (Reuters) - Toronto's main stock index closed lower on Friday as investors booked some profits after the TSX notched its biggest weekly gain in more than two years on optimism that steps were being taken to resolve Europe's debt crisis. The mining-heavy materials sector dragged the index lower, as shares of gold miners slid despite spot gold edging higher to post its largest weekly gain in more than a month.

He was your basic-as-bread conspiracy theorist, convinced the Soviets put a human-well, a human body, anyway-on the dark side of the moon. "They couldn't accept not trying," he said, like a lunar landing was a football game. He would have loved Cosmonauts. More ?

Piranhas bite toes off swimmers in Brazil

Thousands of flesh-eating piranhas have infested a river beach popular with tourists in western Brazil and have bitten at least 15 unwary swimmers, authorities said Wednesday.

Officials in the city of Caceres in Mato Grosso state said this is the first time they have had a problem with piranhas at the Daveron beach on the Paraguay river, where the aggressive fish began schooling about two weeks ago.

"People have got to be very careful. If they're bitten, they've got to get out of the water rapidly and not allow the blood to spread," firefighter Raul Castro de Oliveira told Globo TV's G1 website.

Elson de Campos Pinto, 22, was bitten Sunday.

"I took a dip in the river and when I stood up, I felt pain in my foot," Pinto told G1. "I saw that I had lost the tip of my toe. I took off running out of the river, afraid that I would be further attacked because of the blood. I'm not going back in for a long time."

City officials said the beach will remain open because it's an important draw for tourists in Brazil's Pantanal region, known for its ecotourism.

Each September, Caceres hosts what local officials bill as Brazil's biggest fishing festival, a weeklong event that draws 200,000 people for fishing tournaments and concerts.

Gonzaga Junior, a spokesman for the city government, said he didn't think the piranha attacks would hurt that event since it is many months away.

He tried to put the best face on the problem.

"Everyone knows there are piranhas in the region and have always taken the necessary precautions," he said. "What is different this time is that they've appeared where they never appeared before."

The city has seen far fewer people than normal use the beach recently because of the piranha attacks. It was deserted Tuesday, a national holiday in Brazil, normally a heavy beach day.

Officials have put up large signs warning swimmers about the piranhas, reading in blood red letters: "Attention swimmers. Area at risk of piranha attacks. Danger!"

Local fisherman Hildegard Galeno Alves said that when he throws out a fishing net near the beach of late he catches numerous piranhas.

"I come here with my kids and I always see blood on the river banks," he told G1. "The worst is that the attacks are in shallow water, next to the bank."

Despite making his living off the river, Alves left no doubt about his feelings for the water.

"I would never even think of going in there," he said.

HTC Hit With Cease And Desist Letter Over The ?Vivid? Name

htcvividWith the HTC Vivid garnering mixed reviews, it looks like the device?s name may be the most interesting thing about it. At least one company thinks so, anyway: the porn peddlers at Vivid Entertainment have filed a cease and desist notice against the company for use of the "Vivid" name. According to TMZ, Vivid's legal counsel filed the notice because they are afraid consumers will think the LTE-capable smartphone is somehow connected to Vivid's adult video empire. Yes, really. Just let that sink in for a moment.

Virtual rioters predict how crowds move

Sandrine Ceurstemont, editor, New Scientist TV
How did recent UK riots spread so quickly to a larger area? Although there are several phenomena at work, a new simulation, developed by geographer Paul Torrens from University of Maryland and his team, is helping to visualise how groups of people tend to move around. "Whereas many existing approaches use particle physics, my approach is sourced in theory and observation," says Torrens.

Based on how people interact with their environment, the model incorporates about 30 different behaviours, from processes like path planning and collision avoidance to group dynamics such as herding and following a leader. Concepts are translated into mathematical models by applying statistics or using methods like game theory. Different algorithms can be applied to each agent, or to the group as a whole, to see how they affect overall behaviour.
?
The video begins with a simulated riot where characters are static and where the emphasis is on social interaction, decision-making and the connection between geography and social agency.? But the crowd models that follow focus on how a group of people moves around. They can also be experienced as immersive graphical environments on a variety of platforms, such as Xbox or Kinect.

According to Torrens, the simulation is unlikely to help prevent riots due to their complexity. But it's a realistic representation of mass behaviour in terms of geographical factors. "We've tested it using data from real people moving around," he says. "The model does a good job at replicating human movement."

With some improvements, the system could be used to help with disaster relief. Torrens plans to refine the way people interact with each other and how they respond to changes in their environment. "We're building a dynamic environment where buildings collapse and agents plan their behaviour in response, for example by avoiding falling objects," he says. "We plan to develop an Xbox version of this system for use in emergency planning."?? ?

Democrats, Republicans far apart on deficit deal (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The top Republican on a special deficit-cutting panel says GOP negotiators have "gone as far as we feel we can go" on tax hikes, a public signal that a debt bargain could be out of reach despite weeks of negotiations.

Texas Rep. Jeb Hensarling told CNBC Tuesday that the bipartisan debt supercommittee is "somewhat stymied for the moment" because panel Democrats are insisting on tax increases of up to $1 trillion in exchange for cost curbs on rapidly spiraling benefit programs such as Medicare and Social Security.

The top Democrat on the deficit supercommittee, Sen. Patty Murray of Washington, countered that it's up to Republicans to send a "credible offer with real revenue" to jump-start talks that seem to have mostly stalled since a swap of offers last week.

The deficit for the just-completed budget year was $1.3 trillion, requiring the government to borrow 36 cents for every dollar it spends. Even a successful negotiation that produces $1.2 trillion in cuts will still leave a deficit crisis that requires painful choices by policymakers on taxes and benefits programs, budget experts agree.

The backbiting has intensified since the exchange of offers. The Democrats' most recent plan called for $2.3 trillion in deficit cuts, including a $1 trillion tax increase over the coming decade. Republicans countered with almost $300 billion in new tax revenues as part of a $1.5 trillion debt plan, an offer that even a top Democrat, Majority Whip Dick Durbin of Illinois, called a breakthrough.

"The Democrats won't put a plan on the table to solve the problem, and anything they do that even remotely addresses health care, even superficially, they're insisting on" a $1 trillion tax increase, Hensarling said. "It's not going to happen."

The debt panel is charged with coming up with at least $1.2 trillion in deficit cuts over the coming decade as part of a bargain between President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, this summer. Failure would trigger across-the-board spending cuts that especially alarm defense hawks.

Boehner publicly blessed the GOP offer on taxes Tuesday, bucking opposition by some GOP presidential hopefuls and colleagues wary of violating a longstanding point of party orthodoxy.

The supercommittee has until a week from Wednesday to vote on any compromise, but several officials said that in reality, perhaps as little as 48 or 72 hours are available to the six Republicans and six Democrats.

While Boehner's voice is important, his endorsement does not mean all Republicans will follow him or a deal is in sight. Republicans have been unified for two decades in opposition to higher taxes, while Democrats on the supercommittee insist on additional revenue before they will agree to cuts in benefit programs as part of a compromise.

Boehner said the plan, outlined a week ago to Democrats on the committee, was "a fair offer." Adding an overhaul of the federal tax code would generate economic growth, he said.

The full committee hasn't met in several days, but various subgroups have been in near constant contact.

More than deficit reduction is at stake, one year into an era of divided government.

Democrats are hoping to add elements of President Barack Obama's jobs legislation to any deficit-cutting deal, including extensions of a Social Security payroll tax cut and unemployment benefits that are due to expire at the end of the year. But their proposal to use savings from shrinking war spending is opposed by some Republicans.

A comprehensive rewrite of farm programs may hang in the balance, too, and lawmakers also must pass legislation to ensure sufficient funds to reimburse doctors who treat Medicare patients.

The twin issues of taxes and benefit programs have long been stumbling blocks in budget negotiations.

In negotiations last summer, according to numerous officials, Obama and Boehner were considering sizable cuts to benefit programs as well as tax reform that would have raised as much as $800 billion in additional revenue. The talks ultimately failed.

Republican leaders still support the concept of swapping modest tax increases for a tax overhaul. And they say that's a good deal, especially since the Bush-era tax cuts expire at the end of next year.

"It's important for us to, in my opinion, reform the tax code," Boehner said. "And we've got the highest business tax rate in the world. We've got a personal tax system that's so complicated it costs Americans about $500 billion a year to comply with the current tax code," he said.

Republican officials say the GOP offer envisions an overhaul that would drop the top tax rate on personal income to 28 percent from the current 35 percent and shave or eliminate some itemized deductions that are commonly used. The top corporate rate would fall also.

Despite Boehner's comments, GOP presidential contenders Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry said they were prepared to oppose a plan along the lines of the one under consideration. Another candidate, Mitt Romney, brushed aside a question on the subject.

DreamWorks CEO envisions an internet with more animation, fewer words

Is the internet on the cusp of a post-text era? Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg certainly thinks so. Speaking at the Techonomy conference in Tucson yesterday, Katzenberg confirmed that his company is already working on expanding 3D animation to the realm of social media, as part of a collaboration with Intel. As Technology Review reports, the two companies have been working on the project for the better part of four years, developing 12-core chips and software capable of delivering real-time photographic animation. Katzenberg didn't offer many details beyond that, but seemed confident that his company's new technology could radically alter the way users share and engage with online content by transcending the boundaries of traditional text. "Text is a learned process but what we do [at Dreamworks] is intuitive and instinctual and you do it from the moment you are born," he said, "We're trying to see if we can move many of these things we can do today in text but moving up to video and audio... with sight and sound." The exec went on to cite Apple's Siri personal assistant as proof that this transition is already underway: "Whether we do it or somebody else does it, we will move from a text world into a audio visual one." Intriguing claims, to be sure, but we'll know more next year, when Dreamworks' new campaign gets underway.

Amazon.com shares slump as costs weigh on outlook (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Shares of Amazon.com Inc fell 13 percent in pre-market trade on Wednesday, a day after the company forecast a disappointing outlook for the current quarter on costs related to Kindle and other investments to grow the company.

Analysts with at least four brokerages, including BofA Merrill Lynch and J.P. Morgan Securities, lowered their price targets on Amazon's stock, as third-quarter results came in below market expectations.

The world's largest Internet retailer had launched its Kindle Fire tablet in September, which is likely to weigh on the fourth-quarter profit, Analyst Ken Sena of Evercore Partners said in a note to clients.

"Fulfillment spending was higher than expected as the company works to expand the number of fulfillment centers and adds selection," Sena added and cut the price target on the stock to $260 from $290.

The company has been spending on support growth, primarily to handle the growth of its main online retail business, and plans to build 17 new fulfillment centers this year.

"Amazon continues to invest in high-growth opportunities at the expense of near-term profits," brokerage Stifel Nicolaus said in a note, while cutting its rating on the stock to $265 from $280.

Shares of Amazon slumped to $197.91 in pre-market trading on Wednesday. They had closed at $227.15 on Tuesday on Nasdaq.

India central bank raises rates (Reuters)

MUMBAI (Reuters) ? India's central bank raised interest rates on Tuesday for the 13th time since early 2010 but gave a strong signal it may be finished with its current tightening cycle as growth slows and it expects high inflation to ease starting in December.

The Reserve Bank of India raised its policy lending rate, the repo rate, by 25 basis points to 8.5 percent, in line with expectations in a Reuters poll last week.

It also revised down its growth forecast for the current fiscal year ending in March to 7.6 percent from 8 percent with a downward bias earlier, while sticking with its forecast that headline wholesale price index inflation will ease to 7 percent at the end of the fiscal year.

The likelihood of a rate move at its December review is "relatively low," the central bank said in a statement.

"Beyond that, if the inflation trajectory conforms to projections, further rate hikes may not be warranted," it said.

Investors took comfort in the prospect that India's steady upward rise in interest rates may be at an end.

The benchmark 10-year bond yield fell as much as 7 basis points to 8.69 percent after the policy statement, while the 5-year swap rate fell 10 bps to 8.30 percent. The main BSE index (.BSESN) extended gains to as much as 1.1 percent before dropping.

"Clear direction from the RBI is now in place, that they are not looking at any more increase," Indranil Pan, chief economist at Kotak Mahindra Bank.

The RBI under Governor Duvvuri Subbarao has been one of the most aggressive central banks anywhere and has continued to take its fight to inflation even as its global counterparts have refocused monetary policy toward promoting growth.

Subbarao maintained his hawkish view on Tuesday.

"While the impact of past monetary actions is still unfolding, it is necessary to persist with the anti-inflationary stance," he said in the policy statement.

The central bank warned that medium term inflationary risks in Asia's third-largest economy remain high due to structural imbalances in agriculture, infrastructure bottlenecks, and India's fiscal deficit.

"In the absence of progress on these, over the medium term, the monetary policy stance will have to take into account the risks of inflation surging in response to even a moderate growth recovery," it said.

Despite continued policy tightening, inflation in India remains sticky, with the headline wholesale price index up 9.72 percent annually through September, its 10th straight month above 9 percent and highest among the BRIC grouping of economies that includes Brazil, Russia and China.

Inflation in India is driven in large part by high food and global commodity prices as well as fiscal policies that spur demand, all of which is beyond the scope of monetary policy, prompting some critics to urge the RBI to relent in its tightening.

Meanwhile, India's economy grew at 7.7 percent in the June quarter, its weakest in six quarters, while industrial output growth was below 5 percent in July and August.

In last week's Reuters poll, 17 economists had expected the central bank to raise rates on Tuesday but 13 had expected it to pause, with most respondents expecting rates to remain unchanged after Tuesday for the remainder of the fiscal year through March.

Ancient cooking pots reveal gradual transition to agriculture

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2011) ? Humans may have undergone a gradual rather than an abrupt transition from fishing, hunting and gathering to farming, according to a new study of ancient pottery.

Researchers at the University of York and the University of Bradford analysed cooking residues preserved in 133 ceramic vessels from the Western Baltic regions of Northern Europe to establish whether these residues were from terrestrial, marine or freshwater organisms.

The research led by Oliver Craig (York) and Carl Heron (Bradford) included an international team of archaeologists from The Heritage Agency of Denmark, The National Museum of Denmark, Moesg?rd Museum (Denmark), Christian-Albrechts-Universit?t, Kiel (Germany) and the Arch?ologisches Landesmuseum, Schleswig (Germany).

The project team studied ceramic pots from 15 sites dating to around 4,000 BC- the time when the first evidence of domesticated animals and plants was found in the region. The research, which was funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, is published online in the latest edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

The research team found that fish and other aquatic resources continued to be exploited after the advent of farming and domestication, with pots from coastal locations containing residues enriched in a form of carbon found in marine organisms.

Around one-fifth of coastal pots contained other biochemical traces of aquatic organisms, including fats and oils absent in terrestrial animals and plants. At inland sites, 28 percent of pots contained residues from aquatic organisms, which appeared to be from freshwater fish.

Lead author Dr Oliver Craig, of the Department of Archaeology at York, said: "This research provides clear evidence people across the Western Baltic continued to exploit marine and freshwater resources despite the arrival of domesticated animals and plants. Although farming was introduced rapidly across this region, it may not have caused such a dramatic shift from hunter-gatherer life as we previously thought."

Carl Heron, Professor of Archaeological Sciences at the University of Bradford, said: "Our data set represents the first large scale study combining a wide range of molecular evidence and single-compound isotope data to discriminate terrestrial, marine and freshwater resources processed in archaeological ceramics and it provides a template for future investigations into how people used pots in the past."
