4 Ways to Enjoy Free Time in Kent

Article Directory :: Travel & Leisure Articles

My parents are in London visiting me at the moment. When out for dinner at a chic West End Asian fusion restaurant last night I asked them whether they liked the city. 'We've been here many times before' they said. 'Yes but do you like it?' I prompted. 'It's busy, it's crowded, I'll tell you as soon as I got off the train from the countryside, I wanted to go back' my dad finally admitted. I laughed a little. There will always be people who thrive in chaos and other people who run as far away from it as they can. Thankfully, most countries have a middle ground. Cities that are bearable to live in, where it doesn't take more than twenty minutes to get anywhere and community is very important. Kent is one of those places within England. Bristol is another, as is Bath. These cities have high streets, nice restaurants, good shopping and beautiful parks. They have schools and universities, businesses, tourist attractions and art institutions. What they don't have is heavy pollution, bumper-to-bumper traffic and a dog-eat-dog air to them. For some this is perfect.

In Kent residents and tourists can enjoy many activities in their free time, including:

1. Castles:

Kent is home to some of the country's most beautiful castles including, Hever Castle, where Anne Boleyn spent her childhood, Dover Castle, which was believed to be the 'key to England', Rochester Castle, considered one of the finest examples of Norman building in the country, and many more.

2. Vineyards:

If you're into wine, than there are few more enjoyable ways to spend an afternoon than driving through the fields where grapes grow, stopping along the way for delicious wine and food. Kent is home to Chapel Down Winery, Lamberhurst Vineyard, and Britain's oldest brewer, Shepherd Neame, amongst others.

3. Hot air balloon rides:

Kent also happens to have some launch sites from where hot air balloons take off on a daily basis. Hot air balloon rides are a wonderful way to spend a morning or afternoon with friends, family or colleagues. Watch the sun rise or fall while floating through the sky in a basket, looking down on the region's beautiful landscape.

4. Golf courses:

If golfing is more your thing, Kent has plenty of courses to choose from. If you don't want to venture too far out of the city, you can play a round at Canterbury Golf Club or Boughton Golf Course. If you'd like to be out in the countryside, pay a visit to Leeds Castle or Hever Castle, both of which have golf courses on site. The Tudor Park Marriott in Bearstead also has a course.

London isn't for everyone. Thankfully the rest of England has a lot more to offer.
